Dominion Energy/MWAA– Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles (EV)

Dominion Energy/MWAA– Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles (EV)

Location – Washington Ronald Raegan and Washington Dulles Airports, VA

Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to support Dominion Energy in delivering multiple electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at various locations within Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). SQ Consultants is responsible for developing the electrical and civil engineering designs necessary to extend power from existing electrical rooms to each designated charging location. The scope includes preparing plans and specifications to support the electrical contractor’s permitting process, as well as providing construction-phase support and as built documentation in accordance with the MWAA Design Manual.

Scope of Services

Design Engineering

  • Collected and reviewed all relevant data, including existing as‑built documentation, MWAA design standards, and permitting requirements, to establish accurate existing conditions.
  • Developed conceptual design for the EV charging system in coordination with Dominion Energy and the electrical contractor.
  • Prepared permit‑level design drawings and documentation to support MWAA’s review and approval process.
  • Provided design recommendations and adjustments in response to field conditions encountered during construction.

Structural Engineering

  • Evaluated existing structural conditions where conduit routing, equipment pads, or transformer foundations interface with structural elements.
  • Reviewed proposed equipment loads and installation locations to confirm compatibility with existing structural capacity.
  • Provided structural input for any required modifications to support EV system components, including equipment pads, trenching impacts, or penetrations.
  • Coordinated with design and electrical teams to ensure structural considerations were fully integrated into the final construction documents.

Electrical Engineering

  • Prepared electrical site plan drawings showing underground distribution routing from the existing manhole to the new transformer and EV charging equipment.
  • Designed power distribution extensions from existing electrical rooms to each EV charging location.
  • Coordinated with Dominion Energy and the electrical contractor to finalize electrical design requirements for permitting and construction.
  • Developed construction‑ready electrical drawings following permit approval and in accordance with MWAA standards.

Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)

  • Monitored construction activities to verify compliance with approved design drawings, specifications, and MWAA requirements.
  • Performed QA/QC reviews during installation of electrical distribution, conduct routing, and equipment placement.
  • Documented field observations and identified deviations requiring design clarification or corrective action.
