Reconstruction of Steel Frame Shed Structure on Concrete
Reconstruction of Steel Frame Shed Structure on Concrete
Location – NOVA Wild Zoo and Safari Park, Vienna, VA

Project Overview
SQ Consultants was retained by NOVA Wild to evaluate fire-related damage to several storage structures within the zoo. The incident resulted in significant deterioration of the shed’s steel framing system and localized damage to the concrete slab. SQ Consultants prepared permit-ready reconstruction drawings to facilitate restoration of the facility. All assessment and rehabilitation activities were planned and executed to minimize disruption to ongoing zoo operations.
Scope of Services
Structural Engineering
- Conducted a detailed structural assessment of fire‑damaged components, including steel columns, steel trusses, wood beams, and aluminum cladding.
- Performed testing and evaluation of the concrete slab at multiple damaged locations to assess integrity and subsurface conditions.
- Developed structural rehabilitation measures, including redesign of steel columns and trusses and repair recommendations for the concrete slab.
- Prepared and submitted a written structural assessment report documenting all damaged elements for Fairfax County review. Provided construction‑phase structural monitoring, including QA/QC oversight to ensure compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
Design Engineering
- Developed the rehabilitation plan, prepared complete design, construction drawings required for permitting and reconstruction. Coordinated design elements across structural, architectural, and permitting requirements to ensure a code‑compliant and constructible solution.
- Prepared and submitted permit and construction drawing packages to Fairfax County, resulting in successful approvals. Supported the contractor during construction with design clarifications and coordination as needed.
Geotechnical Engineering
- Performed concrete slab testing at damaged locations to evaluate subsurface conditions and confirm suitability of existing support.
- Assessed soil and subgrade conditions indirectly through slab integrity testing to identify any geotechnical concerns affecting rehabilitation. Documented findings and incorporated geotechnical considerations into the overall rehabilitation and reconstruction pla
