Evaluation of a Retaining Wall – Bed Bath & Beyond

Evaluation of a Retaining Wall – Bed Bath & Beyond

Location – Tysons Corner, VA

Project Overview

SQ Consultants was retained to perform an inspection and structural evaluation of an existing cast in place concrete retaining wall located adjacent to a retail building and parking lot. The wall was measured approximately 100 feet in length, 12 inches in thickness, and ranged in height from 2 to 8 feet. Observed conditions included visible cracking and areas of water staining along the wall face. On the parking lot side, separation between the concrete curb and pavement was allowing surface runoff to drain toward the wall, contributing to seepage and moisture accumulation at the base.

Scope of Services

Structural Engineering

  • Conducted a site reconnaissance to visually identify irregularities and potential indicators of distress or failure along the retaining wall.
  • Performed a detailed structural inspection focusing on areas exhibiting cracking, displacement, and lateral movement.
  • Completed engineering analysis by field observations and structural assessment findings to determine the causes of distress.
  • Evaluated structural performance and identified deficient or failed sections requiring reinforcement or rehabilitation.

Design Engineering

  • Developed rehabilitation recommendations based on structural assessment results, addressing both immediate failures and long‑term performance needs.
  • Formulated design measures to reinforce and stabilize the retaining wall, incorporating appropriate materials, detailing, and construction methods.
  • Prepared conceptual repair strategies aimed at mitigating future deterioration and improving overall system durability.
